About
Dr. Karl Diel was a brilliant surgeon from Jimbolia, whose name is associated with numerous achievements in the medical field. He was born on February 14, 1855, in Jimbolia, where he attended primary school. He completed secondary school in Szarvas and studied medicine in Budapest. After his years of study and internship in Budapest, he returned in 1882 to his hometown, becoming the attending physician of the Csekonics family.
Practicing medicine with great dedication and passion, living for his profession and for helping others, Dr. Karl Diel remained an important figure both in 20th-century medicine and in the town of Jimbolia. He founded a hospital where he performed thousands of surgeries, including brain operations, which were a premiere at the time. Using innovative surgical techniques, he raised the “Erzsebet Korhaz” hospital to the level of university hospitals in Vienna, Budapest, or Berlin. In recognition of his work and merits in the medical profession, he received numerous diplomas, distinctions, and decorations, including the “Star of Romania” in the rank of Commander, awarded by His Majesty King Ferdinand I. He passed away on May 1, 1930. More than a decade later, in 1940, the people of Jimbolia erected a statue in his honor in the city center, and today the hospital in Jimbolia bears his name.
Karl Diel married the daughter of the Imperial Court physician in Vienna, Aloysia Gombocz Bayer de Rogacz, and together they had three children. Their first child was Ludwig Diel, also a well-known doctor, and Ludwig’s daughter, Carla, later became the wife of the renowned academician Pius Brînzeu. In order to keep alive the memory of the surgeon and his family, the Jimbolia City Hall, together with the town hospital and Professor Dr. Pia Brînzeu, the great-granddaughter of Dr. Diel, inaugurated the “Dr. Karl Diel” Memorial House on August 11, 2000, as a sign of gratitude for the lifetime work of the doctor from Jimbolia.
In the exhibition rooms, the world of Karl Diel and his family is presented with great care. On the one hand, there are objects that belonged to the family, and on the other hand, there is an impressive collection of medical books, some of the German and French volumes being over one hundred years old. There are also surgical instruments used between 1900 and 1944, medical prescriptions, medicine bottles, patients’ medical records, photographs, documents, and notes about the operations performed by both Karl Diel and his son, Ludwig Diel, during the first half of the last century.
The “Dr. Karl Diel” Memorial House welcomes you with open doors to reveal a fascinating glimpse into the history of medicine in the Banat region.
